Mapleton student earns honor

Mapleton’s Katelyn Amero has earned a 2017 Richard Steele Scholarship, allowing her to attend a three-week EXPLO program this summer at Yale University.   

A student at Presque Isle High School, she plays percussion with the high school band, plays junior varsity soccer, is a member of the gifted and talented program and has an aptitude for science and mathematics.  She is a dancer at MoonDance Studios, a Senior Scout in Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133 and is a member of a local 4-H Club.

The EXPLO career exploration program will help prepare her for college and a potential career in the medical field. The program will follow her while in high school and guide her future education.

Amero’s parents, Scott and Laurie Amero, said they were elated with her selection for this scholarship and its accompanying opportunities.

Town crowns royalty

On Saturday evening April 8, Mapleton’s new 2017 queens were crowned during the Miss Mapleton Pageant, directed by Paula Shaw.

The new Little Miss Mapleton is Emily Hallett.  She sang the song “Carrie Sue.”  She is the daughter of Chris and Andrea Hallett. Madison Oakes, daughter of Bruce and Mindy Oakes, was first runner-up.

The Pre-Teen Miss Mapleton winner was Olivia Locke, daughter of Chris and Sherry Locke. She performed a jazz dance to “Stray Cat Strut.” Elizabeth Wing, daughter of Rick and Stephanie Wing. was first runner-up.

Meg Casavant, daughter of Chris and Angel Casavant, was crowned Junior Miss Mapleton. She sang “Part of Your World” from “The Little Mermaid.” Libby Kinney, daughter of Kevin and LeRae Kinney, was first runner-up, while Keira Cyr, daughter of Wayne and Danielle Cyr, was second runner-up.

The 2017 Teen Miss Mapleton is Elizabeth Collins.  The daughter of Darren and Michelle Collins, she performed a lyrical dance to “Fix You.”

Sarah Morneault was crowned the new 2-17 Miss Mapleton. She performed Mozart’s “Fantasia in D Minor.” Her parents are Jeff and Regina Morneault.

Other awards went to Elizabeth Wing for high ticket sales; Keira Cyr, who received the high sponsorship award and was also named Miss Photogenic; and Libby Kinney, who won the Pageant Spirit Award.

Annual Lions auction

President Allen Salo of the Mapleton Lions Club announced the club’s 55th annual auction will be held on May 13, 2017, at the Mapleton Lions Hall at 6:30 p.m., following their hot chicken sandwich public supper.  

Club members have begun soliciting nearly 400 items, gift certificates and services to be auctioned in support of the club. Lions Ron Leonard and Matt Gregg will be auctioneers.  

The auction is the club’s single largest fundraising event. Any Lion is willing to accept donations for the support of club projects.

The public supper will be served from 4:30 to 6 p.m.   

DAZE fundraiser

The Mapleton Daze committee is gearing up for Mapleton Daze weekend, June 22-25, and seek volunteers. The committee will hold a craft and vendor sale at the Lions Hall on Sunday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Businesses, organizations and crafters are invited to reserve a table for $25. The show is free to the public.

The committee will also sell past years’ or this year’s T-shirts. Contact Deana Easler at 227-6128.

The group plans an upcoming Bingo fundraiser and is seeking prize donations. Contact Lynnelle Lavway at 227-5896 and she will make arrangements for pickup. The date is not yet set; watch this column for updates.

First Friday luncheon

The Mapleton United Methodist Church will hold its regular First Friday luncheon on May 5 at 11:30 a.m.  The public is invited. There is no charge for the lunch but donations are accepted.
