100 Years Ago – May 2, 1917

    Gift — The Bangor & Aroostook has offered to its Houlton employees a large tract of land, back of the round house, for garden purposes. The tract is most suitable for garden purposes. The plot will be ploughed  at an early date and marked off into convenient lots for the employees.

    New position  Roy Craig, formerly operator at the Dream Theatre, has accepted a position with Hallett-McKeen Co.

75 Years Ago – April 30, 1942

    Elected  Two Houlton girls elected All-Maine Women at University. Francis M. Donovan and Helen R. Mullen receive Highest Women’s non-scholastic honor. Both are prominent in U. of M. student activities.

    Anniversary  The 25th anniversary of Houlton Council, Knights of Columbus, was observed at the K of C Hall with about 100 present. A chicken pie supper was served with Mrs. W.J. Griffin catering. The Rev. John  Arsenault, guest of honor, gave a short talk.

50 Years Ago – May 3, 1967

    Taking tour  Albert Daniels, of Daniels Florist, has received word that is one of 10 men from New England to be selected as a member of the 1967 Northeastern States Floral and Horticultural Leaders Goodwill People-to-People Travel Program. The program includes a visit to Holland, Denmark, Sweden, the Soviet Union, Hungary and Germany, and will represent the first time that a people-to-people delegation of florists and nurserymen have visited behind the iron curtain.

    New dean  Ricker College President C. Worth Howard announces election by the board of trustees of David H. Cotton as dean of instruction of Ricker College. He will be responsible for conduct of the academic program and related activities, including supervision of the faculty, student course work, admissions and student records.

25 Years Ago – April 29, 1992

   Winner  Kirsten Richardson has received recognition and a $50 award as the result of a VFW essay contest.

   Breakfast — The Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual May Breakfast at St. Mary’s Church. More than 200 May baskets have been prepared for the event. Checking the menu for the breakfast is Janet Lynds and Faye McCue, co-chairmen of the Houlton Regional Hospital.
