102 Years Ago – May 6, 1915

Vacancy filled — The Governor appointed F.A. Peabody of Houlton, a member of the State Highway Commission, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Commissioner Nelson. Those acquainted with Mr. Peabody regard the appointment as an excellent one. 

Dormitory arrangements — Col. C.P. Allen returned from Fort Kent, where he went in company with Supt. Payson Smith and S.C. Singleton, a member of the Board of Trustees of the State Normal School, to make arrangements for the building of the boys’ dormitory at the State Training School.

75 Years Ago – April 30, 1942

Adams re-elected president — Ansil Adams was re-elected president of the Aroostook Valley Fish & Game Club at the annual meeting and banquet. Dr. W.S. Unger was elected vice-president; Lester E. Hughes, secretary; and Vincent Boyle, treasurer. Berry Wade, state fish and game department of fish hatcheries, was principal speaker at the meeting.

Soucier new V.F.W. head — Louis R. Soucier, new commander of the local V. F. W. Post, enlisted in the National guard in 1922 in Battery A and remained with the unit until November 3, 1941 when he was transferred to the National Guard Reserve. His record in World War I showed that he enlisted in June 1917 in A Company 103rd Infantry 26th Division and spent two years overseas on the battlefields of France.

50 Years Ago – May 3, 1967

Historic moment — William Flora, chairman of the Board of the Mark E. and Emily Turner Library, along with Library Board members opened the dedication ceremonies Sunday that began with the cutting of the ribbon by Mark Turner assisted by Chairman of the City Council Burton Tomkins.

25 Years Ago – April 29, 1992

LRC expresses thanks — John McCormack of New Sweden, chairman of the Loring Readjustment Committee, presented Michael Kelley, vice president of Key Bank of Maine with a copy of the LRC’s action plan. Sam Collins of Caribou, vice president of LEAD, and John Tweed of Limestone, vice chairman of the LRC, took part in the ceremony held during a meeting of the LRC executive committee. The LRC and LEAD thanked Key Bank for its loan of Kenneth Wagner, economic development consultant, who developed the 18-point action plan outlining possibilities for reuse of the base after its closure.

Outstanding volunteers — Three Aroostook County women, Dorothy Marecaux of Ashland, Alice McQuade of Mars Hill and Velma Grivois of Van Buren, were named Outstanding Volunteers by Abnaki Girl Scout Council at an April meeting in Caribou. This award was established by Girl Scouts of the USA to recognize special achievements of volunteers above and beyond what is expected in the position held.

Maine Agri-Women officers — Newly elected Maine Agri-Women officers, formed to complement activities of the Maine Potato Board, were Sandra Durepo of Fort Fairfield, secretary; Joan Flewelling of Easton, vice president; Peggy Niblett of Easton, president; and Julian Boyd of Mars Hill, treasurer.
