Sunny weather finally arrived in central and southern Aroostook County Thursday, meaning a bundle of baseball and softball games, as well as tennis matches were on the docket.
The LCS/MSSM teams are finally going to get their season-opening games in after many postponements over the last week and a half. The Eagles host Fort Fairfield beginning at 4 p.m. in both baseball and softball. The Tiger baseball team enters with a 4-0 record, while the softball team stands at 2-2.
Katahdin is scheduled to play at Southern Aroostook at 3:30 p.m. in a clash of fellow RSU 50 squads. The Cougar baseball team sits atop the Class D North standings with a 3-0 record, while SACS is 3-1. For softball, the Warriors are 2-1 on the year, while the Cougars (0-3) are searching for their first win.
The Presque Isle baseball and softball teams travel to Houlton for a 4 p.m. contest. The Wildcat baseball team is 1-1 in Class B North, while the Shires are 2-1 in Class C North. The Houlton softball club is 2-1 on the year, while the Wildcats (0-2) are still looking for their first win of the season.
East Grand hosts Shead of Eastport at 4 p.m. The Viking baseball squad is 0-2 on the season, while Shead is 2-0. In softball, both squads tout a 1-1 record.
The Ashland baseball team is looking for its first victory when it makes the trip to St. Agatha for a 4 p.m. contest against Wisdom, which will be playing its first game of the spring.
In baseball action Wednesday, the game in Dyer Brook was competitive through four innings before Southern Aroostook scored 10 times in the bottom of the fifth to walk off with a 15-3 triumph over the Hornets. Hunter Lawlor, Hunter Walker and Nate Lilley all had three hits in the 17-hit attack for coach Brett Russell’s squad, which improved to 2-1. Walker finished with three RBIs on the afternoon. Kyle Beaulier tripled for one of the two Ashland hits.
The Warriors’ softball team is now 2-1 after a 12-11 win over the Hornets (0-2). Katrina Altmannsberger drove in Aliyah Morales for the game-winning run and Kylie Vining homered earlier in the game for SA.
Fort Fairfield stayed perfect with an 18-2 win over East Grand in Danforth Tuesday. Jared Harvey had two hits and four RBIs and Jon Bernard also contributed a pair of hits while scoring twice in the lopsided win. Thomas Gilman and Wyatt Oliver had RBI singles for the Vikings.
The Tiger girls fell by an 11-10 score to the Vikings.
In tennis, Houlton travels to Van Buren for boys and girls matches at 3:30 p.m. Both Houlton squads are 0-1 on the season, while Van Buren’s boys are 3-0 and the girls are 2-1.
Caribou will host Presque Isle at 2 p.m. and then both Viking squads turn around and play Madawaska at 4 p.m. Both Viking squads enter the day with 4-0 records. The Wildcat boys are 2-0 and the girls are 1-1.
