PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team will participate in the City Universities of New York Athletic Conference Tournament beginning Thursday. The Owls, in their second season as associate members in the CUNYAC for baseball, finished with a 4-28 overall record.
The Owls are the sixth seed and will face the third-seeded City College of New York in a play-in game to be hosted by Baruch College in New York City. A win pits UMPI against the hosts later on Thursday. The tourney continues Friday and Saturday.
UMPI lost four of five games last week. The final four were held over the weekend in Boston. The Owls lone win came in Friday’s opener against Dean College by a score of 7-4. A huge fifth inning propelled them to the win. Will Stinson led off with a single and scored on Angel Morales’s triple. An error plated Morales from third and then Martin Egan slammed a two-run double and Solomon Fast contributed an RBI single.
Matt Cauchon and Jesus Garcia had run-scoring hits in the sixth to add some insurance. Saul Nunez had a strong pitching start (seven strikeouts in the complete-game performance) and nabbed the victory.
UMPI lost the second game to Dean and also fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Massachusetts Maritime Academy Saturday, 13-7 and 7-6.
Last Tuesday, UMPI gave Div. I UM-Orono a good game through five innings before the Black Bears used a big six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning and won 8-1. Nunez went 2 for 3 at the plate and Tyler McLaughlin took the pitching loss despite giving up just two runs on four hits over the first five frames.
