Caribou and PI swept in Friday doubleheaders

If the rain holds off, Monday afternoon will be a busy one for local softball, baseball and tennis teams.

The Washburn Beavers make the trip to Limestone to take on LCS/MSSM at 3:30 p.m., while Fort Kent travels to Fort Fairfield and Madawaska to Mars Hill to square off against Central Aroostook. Both of those games have a scheduled first pitch of 4 p.m.

The Presque Isle tennis team is heading north to Madawaska for a doubleheader against the Owls beginning at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s scheduled games were all scrapped due to the rain, but plenty were held Friday.

The following are recaps of some of the softball games played in the region:

John Bapst softball sweeps Caribou, 18-6 and 23-2 — Gina Cambria slammed out eight hits, seven of them for extra bases, as the Crusaders easily downed the Vikings in both ends of a doubleheader played Friday at Caribou High School.

Jaelynn Doody and Emily Adler had two hits each in the first game for the Vikings, while Bapst pitcher Kayla Massey limited Caribou to just two hits while striking out 10 in the second contest.

John Bapst now sports a 4-3 record, while Caribou stands at 0-5.

Old Town softball sweeps Presque Isle, 21-4 and 12-0 — The Wildcats fell to 1-4 after losing both games of a twinbill Friday at home.

Old Town is currently in first place in Class B with its 5-2 record.

In the first game, Olivia Albert homered and had three other hits, driving in five runs in the process, as the Coyotes won decisively. Albert was also the winning pitcher as she recorded 12 strikeouts. Savannah Rodriguez tripled and singled, while Aza Villatora and Sydney Thompson both added a pair of singles for PI.

McKenna Smith led the offense with a homerun, a double and two singles and as the starting pitcher fired a one-hitter as Old Town shut down the Wildcats in the second game of the afternoon. Anna Trombley managed PI’s lone hit.

Thompson pitched the first game, while Faith Leavitt handled the mound duties in game two.

Houlton 13, LCS/MSSM 1 — The Shires improved to 3-2 Friday behind Mikayla Fitzpatrick’s three-hitter. Morgan Bailey doubled and drove in three runs and Tyra Gentle and Alex Maker each added two hits and two RBIs for the winners.

Victoria Eichorn had two of the three hits for the 0-2 Eagles.

Ashland 27, Washburn 6 — Willow Hall recorded three hits and Morgan Doughty added two as the Hornets broke into the win column after an 0-2 start.

Cassidy Pelletier notched the pitching victory in the Friday afternoon game played in Washburn.

Samantha Churchill, Jacquilin West and Maggie Castonguay all singled for the winless Beavers (0-4).

East Grand 17, Washburn 3 — The Vikings’ Hayliegh Shay took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Beavers’ Maggie Castonguay broke it up with a single, but East Grand still won easily Friday afternoon in Washburn.

Shay struck out 14 batters and helped her own cause with three hits. Mallory Gilman also hit safely three times for the 3-1 Vikings. Kassandra Farley tripled for Washburn.

A few baseball games were played as well and results are as follows:

Houlton 12, LCS/MSSM 0 — The host Shires won their fourth consecutive game behind Tyler Bailey’s two-hit shutout Friday. Colby Callnan had three RBIs for 4-1 Houlton, while Alex Sprague and Karter Whitman had hits for the 0-2 Eagles.

Old Town sweeps Presque Isle, 15-2 and 13-3 — The Coyotes earned a pair of convincing road wins Friday. In the game one triumph, Ryan Hoogterp, Jacob Ketch and Nick Swift all banged out three hits for 5-2 Old Town, the first-place team in Class B North.

Bradley Kinney, Jonah Hudson and Bradley Kinney all had two hits for the Wildcats, who are now 1-4 on the season.

Ashland 14, Washburn 10 — The Hornets made it two wins in a row following a big comeback against the Beavers Friday.

Washburn was ahead 10-5 before Ashland rallied for nine runs against the relief pitching of the Beavers. Baily Clark doubled and Kyle Beaulier tripled in the game for Ashland. Braden Campbell had two hits for Washburn and Beaver starting pitcher McCall Turner struck out 16 batters in his six innings of work.

On the tennis court Friday, the Wildcats swept the matches played in Houlton. The Wildcat boys are now 3-1 and the girls evened their record to 2-2. Both Shiretowners teams are now 0-3.
