AUGUSTA, Maine — Social studies students from Houlton High School learned first-hand what it was like to work at the State House on April 27 as they served as honorary pages in the Maine Senate.
As honorary pages, the students helped deliver messages, distribute documents within the Senate chamber, interact with the senators and take part in a real-world, interactive legislative learning experience.
Sen. Mike Carpenter, D-Houlton, welcomed the students, who were part of Tim Tweedie’s social studies class.
“It was great to have Houlton students at the State House and learn more about the process,” Carpenter said. “It’s important for young people to get hands on experience in politics.”
Serving as pages were Anessa Wilde, Dominic Miller, Nolan Jacobs and Jamie Brown.
“It was really cool to do it ourselves at Model State, then to see them doing it,” Brown said. “It was great to actually see the process of how our state’s laws are made.”
“I think it was very informative,” added Miller. “It built upon what we’ve talked about in class and what I learned at Model State Legislature. It was great to see our elected officials do the things we’ve learned about.”
