Northern Maine Community College has announced the upcoming retirement of its dean of development and college relations, Sue Bernard. Bernard returned to Aroostook County to accept the position five years ago.
As dean of development, Bernard has been charged with supporting enrollment and building awareness of the college through the media. In addition, she works closely with the NMCC Foundation, the non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds for scholarships, program equipment and other needs of the college.
“I’m proud to have been a part of this college, which truly has its focus rooted in its name: community. Northern Maine Community College understands the emerging needs of area employers and adapts quickly to deliver the necessary skills to its students. It’s also amazing to see the tremendous support from the community for NM’s objectives,” said Bernard. “It has been a privilege to work with so many professionals who always put the success of students first.”
“Sue has helped develop scholarships with some of our generous donors and has been instrumental in securing important grants for NM,” said Tim Crowley, president of NMCC. “She has also brought the creation of the annual report in house and saved the college thousands of dollars. We are very grateful for her contributions.”
Bernard is best known for her time at WAGM-TV, where she served as news director and anchor for more than 20 years. She also was the communications director for the Diocese of Portland and spokesperson for the Bishop for 11 years prior to joining the leadership team at NMCC.
“I’ve had the good fortune of working with wonderful people in positions that have been important to me,” explained Bernard. “And I’m very happy that I have the opportunity to close out my career back home, in the place I love most. I look forward to watching the continued growth of this exceptional college.”
Her retirement takes effect June 17.
