102 Years Ago – May 13, 1915

A present — Several boys from the Gouldville School surprised Secretary J. J. Thompson by calling on him at the Boy Betterment rooms and presented him with a pretty scarf pin as a token of their regard for him.

Opening game — The opening game of the intermediate town league was played on the High School grounds between the Training School 1st team and the Calumet Club, the former winning the game by a score of 10 to 7.

75 Years Ago – May 7, 1942

Green gave classification talk at Rotary — R. Kendall Green, O. D., gave a classification talk at the Rotary luncheon describing in interesting fashion the many changes that have taken place in the field of optometry.  Raymond Ward was introduced as a new member of the club. Guests were George Brown of Caribou, Donald L. Doady of Caribou and George Stewart of Harrisburg, Penn.

Bearce elected chairman of G. O. P. committee — Louis D. Bearce of Caribou was elected chairman of the Republican county committee in a special meeting held at the Northeastland Hotel. Mrs. Verna Averill of Fort Fairfield and Mrs. Bessie Dougherty of Houlton were elected vice chairmen, with Miss Marion Longstaff of Crystal as secretary, and Harley D. Welch of Chapman, treasurer.

50 Years Ago – May 10, 1967

Kiwanis treats — David Merritt, son of Mrs. Thelma Merritt, and guest of the Kiwanis Club, was the second runner-up for the New England Kiwanis Scholarship Fund. He received a scholarship of $200. David had been accepted at Rensselaer. Another guest was Joseph Nadeau III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Nadeau, Jr. Joe was selected to attend Dirigo at the University of Maine in Orono, and was being sponsored by the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club.    

Title  Kenneth Dunn, Prudential manager, was appointed chairman of a special committee of the Presque Isle Life Underwriters Association to spearhead the formation of a local class (or classes) in The Life Underwriter Training Council’s course of life and health insurance sales training.

25 Years Ago – May 6, 1992

Cyr named outstanding logger — Gregory G. Cy, president of Cyr Lumber Inc. of Portage Lake, received the Outstanding Logging Operation Award given by the Northeastern Loggers’ Association (NELA). Cyr was commended for his reputation for quality harvest management, outstanding forest practices and conscientious attention to safety.

240 Aroostook County athletes participate in Special Olympics — The Olympic torch burned at The Forum in Presque Isle as the Aroostook County Special Olympics took place. Around 240 athletes from all over the County  participated in the annual event. Competitions included running, jumping, the flying disc throw and the softball throw. Volunteers, members of local police and fire departments along with military personnel assisted in the occasion. Olympic co-coordinators Steve Richard and Alice Malloch called the event “very successful,” and some of the “best games ever.” Bill Casavant of the Northern Maine Technical College acted as the master of ceremonies.
