CARIBOU, Maine — Hilltop Elementary School’s kindergarten class employed an amalgamation of all their lessons the week before Mother’s Day to create and write special cards for mom.
Kindergarten teacher Lori Haines explained each component of the project on Wednesday, and indicated that her students had been working on the cards all week.
“We’ve read books and discussed how special our moms are, and everything they do for us,” Haines said. “We included grandmothers and aunts, because they’re special too.”
Haines said the activity uses every skill she taught throughout the year, including about letters, sounds, “sight words,” building sentences and, ultimately, writing something with meaning.
Haines said “sight words” are the very basic, beginning, words that children see when they’re learning to read.
Kindergartener Caleb Boucher wrote, “You are special to me!” on his card.
Fellow student Hadyn White wrote, “Thank you for cooking for me.”
