CARIBOU, Maine — Eight athletes from Aroostook County have earned a trip to the state singles tennis tournament, beginning with the Round of 48 at Colby College in Waterville May 26 and 27.
The top four girls and boys seeds all avoided upsets during Saturday’s Region 1 Tournament held at Caribou High School. Of the eight qualifiers, five are from the undefeated Caribou Vikings girls’ and boys’ teams.
The Vikes’ Gabrielle Marquis, Kelly Nicklaus and Ashley Matlock join Sarah Morneault of Presque Isle as girls who will be moving on.
Marquis, the No. 1 seed, defeated PI’s Hana Boucher, 6-1, 6-1, while No. 2 Nicklaus downed Miranda Bragan of the Wildcats, 6-1, 6-1 and No. 3 Matlock blanked Fort Kent’s Sarah Pelletier, 6-0, 6-0. Morneault, the fourth seed, got past Rebecca Mooers of Houlton, 6-2, 6-2.
In earlier matches, Boucher, seeded ninth, scored a mini upset by pulling off an 8-6 win over No. 8 Cassidy Lovely of Fort Kent. Bragan, at No. 7, beat No. 10 Bailey LaPlante of Van Buren, 8-1. Pelletier, the sixth seed, eased past No. 11 Emma LaJoie of Van Buren, 8-0.
Morneault succeeded in her first-round match over No. 13 Tiffany Morrow of Van Buren, 6-2, 6-2. Mooers, at No. 5, gained an 8-1 triumph over Sydni Pelletier of Fort Kent, who was the 12th seed.
For the boys, Alec Cyr and Parker Deprey, both of Caribou, advanced along with Travis Lebel of Van Buren and Andre Daigle of Presque Isle.
Top-seeded Cyr stopped Brandon Sytulek of Van Buren, 6-0, 6-0. Daigle, seeded second, defeated Niko Naranja of Fort Kent, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 3 Lebel outlasted Gabe Rand of Caribou, 6-4, 6-2. Deprey, holding the fourth seed, notched the victory over Micah Charette of Fort Kent, 6-0, 6-2.
Sytulek, seeded eighth, doubled up on ninth-ranked Jordan Bonville of PI, 8-4, in the first-round match. Daigle beat No. 15 Tim Youngfellow of Houlton, 8-0, while No. 7 Naranja won by a score of 8-5 over No. 10 Brenton Soucy of Van Buren.
Lebel won his opening match over 14th-seeded David Roy of Fort Kent, 8-4. Rand, seeded sixth, was victorious over No. 11 Nolan Porter of Houlton, 8-1. Deprey handed No. 13 Mason Young of Presque Isle an 8-0 defeat. Charette, ranked fifth, stopped Devin Ivey of Houlton, 8-3.
