As a peer ambassador for Crown C.A.R.E.S. (Creating A Respectful Environment in Schools), Lillie Mahan spoke to classrooms at Fort Street Elementary School on Wednesday, May 3, and provided students with information about bullying.
Crown C.A.R.E.S. teaches students how to unite against bullying. Mahan presented to Mrs. Mahan’s sixth-grade students and Mrs. Lagasse’s fifth-grade students. In each class, she presented a slideshow on bullying and some ways students can end it. This included the themes “Bullying ends with ME and YOU” and “Be a STANDBYER not a BYSTANDER.”
Mahan stated we need to continue to teach students that they shouldn’t just stand by and do nothing. She encouraged students to answer questions about the presentation by offering them a small prize of chocolate.
In Mrs. Mahan’s class, students created “feel good locker tags” listed five positive characteristics about each student in the class. The tags were put on the students’ lockers to remind them they are always loved and and supported by their classmates. In Mrs. Lagasse’s class, she created a poster for the Anti Bullying Pledge: “I will not use my hands for hitting or my words for hurting others. I will use them only for helping.” The students stood, took the pledge and put their handprints with paint on the poster. The poster will remain in Mrs. Lagasse’s class for the rest of the year as a reminder about the importance of anti-bullying.
Mahan thanked Mrs. Lagasse and Mrs. Mahan for allowing her to speak to the students, and can’t wait to visit another classroom.

Rotary Club
This week, the Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, May 9, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speaker was Michael Stiggle. Originally from Connecticut, he moved to Mars Hill in 2007. As part of his dream of revitalizing Mars Hill’s downtown area, he has purchased the old J. J. Newberry building and is opening a restaurant, “Timberwolves.”
The site is still under renovations at this time, but Stiggle plans to open in mid-June, serving homestyle foods for lunch and dinner. There will be a waiting area for folks to sit in while waiting to be seated. He also plans on having music on occasion.
He hopes to see other small businesses open in town so people can shop locally and keep our money in town.
