The Town of Perham would like to gauge interest in holding a Town Wide One Day Yard Sale, and organizers would like to have a commitment from folks who would like to be involved. The more participants there are, the better the the event will be for both buyers and sellers.

The proposed sale date is Saturday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are signup sheets at the Town Office and the Perham Post Office. The deadline to sign up is July 1.

All roads with participating residents will be marked clearly this year. There will also be advertisements, free of charge. If there is enough interest, the parking area around the town office may be able to be used as a sort of flea market for those who would prefer to set up there.

For more information or to sign up, call Patty at 455-4891 or Debby at 498-3433.

Swapping seed

The first annual Perham Seed Swap on March 25 was a success. Organized by Nina and John Rasmussen, the newest selectman, the event was held at the Town Office and was well attended.

Participants enjoyed refreshments along with a healthy helping of garden talk, seeds and seedlings. Those who did not have any seeds for trading could still go home with plenty to plant as there was enough for everyone.

Organizers plan to hold the seed swap every year.

The swap was held during Maine Maple Weekend, with events at Connolly’s Sugar Shack. That, as usual, was also well attended and a great success.

Saving a schoolhouse

Perham residents voted at town meeting to preserve the town’s legacy by saving the Northstar Schoolhouse.

The old Northstar Schoolhouse on the Tangle Ridge Road, along with the parcel on which it is located, will be rescued and refurbished under the guidelines and umbrella of a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization. The process has resulted in the creation of the Perham Historical Society.

This is a true community and grassroots volunteer effort and there is always room for more volunteers. If interested contact Selectman John Rasmussen or the Town Office.

Historical society members will also accept any memorabilia, stories, and historical items pertaining to the schoolhouse, its time as a church, or the town in general. The group is seeking building materials and muscle, as well as personal stories of attending the Northstar School.

Look for updates and notices of any upcoming events at the schoolhouse.

Anyone with interesting items for this project — photos, maps, books, etc. — may contact Rasmussen. Any donations to the Perham Historical Society will be cataloged and credited. Remember that photos can now be digitally copied, so donors can keep originals and share copies.
