AKRON, Ohio — The UMPI softball team was competitive for the third consecutive game, but once again lost in the USCAA National Tournament held at Firestone Stadium.
In the ninth-place game held Tuesday, May 16, the Owls were shut out by Penn State-Fayette, 2-0.
The Owls were held in check by Roaring Lions pitcher Tiffany Markevitch, who allowed eight baserunners during her seven-inning outing. Seven were on hits and the other on a walk.
Nicole Marucci and Darrean Thornton each picked up two hits for the Owls, while Ariel Williams, Delanie Strout and Brianna Losee added one each.
Sara Packard handled the pitching duties for UMPI and gave up a pair of earned runs, one in the third and the other in the fourth. Monica Joseph knocked in both of the runs for the Roaring Lions. She allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out three.
The Owls, who fell to Carlow University and Penn State-Beaver on Monday, May 15, both in extra innings, finished their season with a 23-16 record. The team was coached by Sara Shaw.
