102 Years Ago – May 20, 1915

Superintendent elected — Norman I. Gallagher, of Limestone, who graduated from Aroostook State Normal School in 1905, was elected as superintendent of the Washburn/Mapleton District.

Delegates from General Custer Lodge — James L. Oak and W. O. Chase traveled to Portland to attend the Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythias as delegates from General Custer Lodge. Mr. Chase visited schools while away and Mr. Oak stayed in August for a short period of time.

75 Years Ago – May 14, 1942

Tapley named King Lion Local Service Club — J. Walter Tapley was elected president of the Presque Isle Lions Club at the Northeastland Hotel, William Hummer, Harry Stephenson and John H. Wilson were elected vice-presidents.

Gray appointed District Deputy G. M. — Judge Granville C. Gray was appointed District Deputy Grand Master, AF&AM, of the Aroostook District. He succeeded Norris Estabrook of Houlton. Judge Gray’s appointment was made in Portland at the Grand Lodge.

50 Years Ago – May 17, 1967

Akeley received honorary Doctorate — Robert V. Akeley, of Beltsville, Md., a native of Presque Isle, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Maine during commencement exercises at its Orono and Portland campuses. Akeley, nationally known for his work in the potato-breeding program, received his B.S. degree in agronomy from the University of Maine in 1937 and his M.S. degree in 1942. He had been associated with the Federal program of potato investigations since 1932 when he assumed the responsibility for conducting the Federal Breeding Program at Aroostook Farm in Presque Isle.

Twin brothers win top WHS honor parts — Principal Carleton L. Barnes of Washburn announced graduation honor parts; twin brothers, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Flewelling of Crouseville, Robert and Richard Flewelling captured the top two honors: Robert the valedictorian title and Richard the salutatorian. First honors went to David Drake.

25 Years Ago – May 13, 1992

Lady Wildcats split series with Hampden — After a poor 1-5 start, the Presque Isle High School varsity softball team won two of these games including a split with Big East Conference rival Hampden, to improve their record to 3-6 and remain in the Eastern Maine Class A playoff hunt. Under a bright sunshine afternoon, pinch runner Cortney Arndt scored from first on a triple by senior second baseman Iona Lee in the bottom of the seventh inning to push the ’Cats past the Lady Broncos of Hampden, 12-11.

ACAP’s new employment director — Brian Thibeau, executive director of the Aroostook County Action Program, announced the appointment of Margaret Bean of Presque Isle to the position of director of employment and training, to manage the programmatic and fiscal operation ot the employment and training division of ACAP, which is the designated comprehensive service deliverer of job training services in Aroostook County.
