HOULTON, Maine — Anyone who has ever wondered how easy it is to become distracted while texting and driving, or those curious about how alcohol impairs a driver’s judgement should plan on attending one of two public events this Saturday, May 20.
The Houlton Police Department is partnering with the Maliseet Health and Wellness Center and the Aroostook Adopt-a-Block Program at two locations within the community to promote youth and adult awareness on the dangers of drinking and texting while operating a motor vehicle.
The goal is “to expose our youth and adults to these conditions under a controlled safe environment, through practical learning,” said Houlton Police Chief Tim DeLuca. “Participants will wear goggles simulating intoxicated conditions while operating a golf cart through a series of traffic cones. These simulated conditions will give a hands on experience to the risks of drinking and texting while operating. Our goal is to increase awareness and eliminate operating under the influence and distracted driving.”
Community volunteers and police officers will be at two different location for this event:
— The Maliseet Health and Wellness Center Health Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rollerama at 494 North St.
— The Aroostook Adopt-a-Block “mini carnival” will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Houlton Wesleyan Church at 18 Kelleran St.
