Caribou teams dominate at County track championships

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Caribou boys and girls repeated as Aroostook League champions in track and field, and Fort Fairfield’s Jonah Daigle and Presque Isle’s Tori Koch were the top individual point scorers for the second consecutive year.

Those performances took place in 90-degree temperatures at the Gehrig Johnson Athletic Complex on Thursday, May 18.

In the boys’ meet, Caribou led the way with 207.5 points, with Presque Isle coming in second with 94. Houlton (88), Fort Fairfield (75) and Fort Kent (68) followed. LCS/MSSM (27), GHCA (14.5), Washburn (6) and Hodgdon (2) were the other teams involved.

The Caribou girls scored 282 points to lead the field of eight teams. Presque Isle was the runner-up with 139. Fort Kent (38.5), Houlton (33), LCS/MSSM (32.5), GHCA (15), Fort Fairfield (13) and Washburn (4) also competed.

Daigle, a sophomore, dominated with four first-place performances. He won the 110-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles, the high jump and the long jump. His 40 points allowed him to capture the Emery Plourde Award as the top boys scorer.

Sophomore Trace Cyr of Presque Isle was second with 32.5 points. Isaiah Brown of Houlton was third with 30, Skyler Bernstein of Fort Kent was fourth with 28 and Devin Marrero of Caribou came in fifth individually with 25.5 points.

Koch, a senior, scored 32.5 points to take the Howard Lello Award as the top girls scorer. Koch took first in three individual events — the 100-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the long jump. She also ran a leg in her Wildcat team’s victorious 4×400-meter relay.

Caribou freshman Paige Espling was just behind Koch with 30 points. The Vikings’ Willow Whitten tallied 28 for third place, while Dolcie Tanguay of Fort Kent (23.5) and Elizabeth Moreau of PI (22.5) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Viking boys featured only three event winners, but used its depth for the win. Taking first for Caribou were Bryce Coffin in the 1,600-meter race walk (8:33), Andre Rossignol in the triple jump (38 feet, 8-1/2 inches) and Evan Michaud in the pole vault (11 feet, 6 inches).

Other boys garnering County titles were: Daigle in the 110-meter hurdles (15.85 seconds), the 300-meter hurdles (44.07), the high jump (6 feet) and the long jump (20 feet, 9-1/2 inches); Cyr in the 100-meter dash (12 seconds), the 200-meter dash (24.83) and the 400-meter dash (54.01); Brown in the 1,600-meter run (4:49.77), the 800-meter run (2:14.27) and the 3,200-meter run (10:57.93); Skyler Bernstein of Fort Kent in the discus (127 feet, 8 inches) and the shot put (40 feet, 3-1/2 inches) and Timothy Glatter of Houlton in the javelin (136 feet).

Taking boys’ relays were the LCS/MSSM 4×800 team of James Cyr, David Govoni, Atticus Maloney and Sawyer LaChance in 10:06.57; the Houlton 4×100 team of Daniel McNally, Jeremy Cook, Thomas Astle and Austin Brown in 49.28 seconds; and the Presque Isle 4×400 team of Drew Cameron, Kyler Caron, Cyr and Jason Dumais in 3:55.76.

The girls’ team from Caribou had 11 winners — nine coming in individual events and the other two in relays.

Espling won a pair, taking the high jump (5 feet) and the triple jump (30 feet, 7 inches). JoJo Fields captured the 100-meter hurdles (18 seconds), Emma Belyea won the 1,600-meter race walk (9:21.06), Alexis Rodriguez the 1,600-meter run (5:57.48), Whitten the 300-meter hurdles (51.9), Madeline Gudde the 800-meter run (2:37.92), Monica McLaughlin the javelin (96 feet, 2 inches) and Kendra Furber the pole vault (7 feet, 6 inches).

The Vikes’ 4×800 relay team, consisting of Gudde, Sarae Greenier, Maren Moir and Ashley Violette, scored the win in 11:55. The 4×100 team of Meagan Dube, Sheridan Blackstone, Rachel Ring and Fields came in first in 55.29 seconds.

Also claiming league titles were Amelia Hanning of Houlton in the 200-meter dash (28.86), Presque Isle’s Madison Jandreau in the 3,200-meter run (13:20.8), LCS/MSSM’s Andrea Rawson in the discus (100 feet, 6-3/4 inches) and PI’s Skylar Vogel in the shot put (31 feet, 3 inches).

The Wildcats’ 4×400 relay team of Koch, Clara Kohlbacher, Moreau and Eleanor St. Peter notched a winning time of 4:30.57.
