GLENWOOD PLANTATION, Maine — A 49-year-old Brunswick man avoided serious injury when his vehicle collided with a moose Tuesday evening on U.S. Route 2A in southern Aroostook.

Paul McCleary was traveling north on Route 2A in a 2003 Chevrolet sedan when a moose crossed the travel lane in front of his car shortly after 8:50 p.m., according to Sgt. Jeffrey Clark of the Maine State Police.

The operator was not able to avoid the animal and struck the moose head on, causing the animal to land on top of his car. The moose was killed and the sedan sustained substantial damage to the hood, front bumper, front windshield, back windshield and roof.

McCleary, who was wearing his seat belt, sustained a laceration to his head and also injured his right wrist. He was treated at the scene by first responders from Calais Fire EMS, but declined to be transported. McCleary’s vehicle had to be towed from the scene by Yorks of Houlton.

No charges were filed in the crash, which was investigated by Trooper Ryan Kilcollins.
