115 Years Ago – May 20, 1902
Fierce fire — Aroostook’s shiretown was visited by a fierce fire. One hundred buildings were destroyed, with a loss of over half million dollars.
Thriving — A new sidewalk has been laid on High Street, the Caribou National Bank will be open for business on June 2, and quite a number of farmers are through planting.
100 Years Ago – May 24, 1917
Arbor day — Governor Milliken has designated Friday, May 25, as Arbor Day. He urges that instead of planting trees and shrubbery the day be devoted to planting gardens for raising foodstuffs.
Opera tonight — The Ethel May Shorey Co., will begin a three nights’ engagement in the opera house tonight. Thursday; this company will be favorably remembered by the theatre going public, and undoubtedly will be greeted by large audiences.
75 Years Ago – May 20, 1942
Exercises — Memorial Day exercises will be carried out this year as usual by the Henry B. Pratt Jr. Post, American Legion. The parade will form at the Methodist Church at 10 and proceed via Sweden, South Main and Bridge to the monument, where a memorial program will be carried out with Father Allard as principal speaker.
Speaking contest — At the annual Aroostook League Speaking Contest held here Friday night, two Caribou students won second-place honors. In the girls’ division, Miss Joyce Wright performed the selection “Taming of the Shrew” and Wm. Pelletier spoke on “Americans Want Action.”
50 Years Ago – May 24, 1967
Delayed — The fall opening of the school was scheduled for Aug. 28 at a meeting of the Caribou School Committee, but the harvest recess dates were not set, committee members feeling that the time of the harvest could better be determined later in the summer.
Knights anniversary — The Caribou Council of the Knights of Columbus, which received its charter for 35 members April 26, 1917, marked its 50th anniversary Sunday with attendance at Holy Mass, followed by a banquet at the Hotel Caribou. On this occasion it presented 50 year honorary certificates to J.W.R. Campbell, Leo Haley, Anthony Disy, and Thomas Gahagan. Two of these, Campbell and Haley, are charter members.
25 Years Ago – May 20, 1992
Forest fire — Nearly 50 acres of woodlands were destroyed in last Wednesday’s forest fire near Stockholm. The land is owned by Moscovic Lumber Co. of Pennsylvania and is located along the abandoned Bangor and Aroostook Railroad Co. track bed. About 50 firefighters from state and local fire departments battled the fire. Two Maine Forest Service helicopters dumped water from the air.
Ames expanding — Ames in Caribou is expanding it’s crafts section, renaming the section of the store “Ames Crafts & More”. They’re offering fashion crafts, wood crafts, frames, fabrics, floral items such as silk & dried flowers, wreaths and containers and so much more.
