DYER BROOK, Maine — Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School, has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2017.
Jackson Mathers is this year’s valedictorian, while Katelyn M. Stevens is salutatorian; Lacey D. Lindsay is first honor essayist; and Makayla F. Crandall is second honor essayist.
Mathers is the son of Bill and Shannon Mathers. He has been very active in sports throughout high school, playing soccer and basketball. He was selected All-Aroostook in soccer and basketball; was named a WHOU All County basketball all star for four years; and was named an MBR basketball All Star for four years.
He was also a BDN All Tourney basketball all star for three years; named a BDN All State basketball honorable mention for two years years; is a 1,000-point scorer for basketball; and was a senior All County, and McDonald’s All Star basketball.
Mathers is a member of the National Honor Society, taking part in Special Olympics, Red Cross Blood Drive and Aroostook County NHS convention. He was the recipient of the Maine Principals’ Award and also participated in the Bridge Year program his junior year earning 13 college credits.
Mathers will attend Thomas College in the fall, majoring in business and playing basketball for the Thomas Terriers.
Stevens is the daughter of Sean and Ann Stevens. She has participated in varsity soccer and varsity softball all four years of high school. She attained All Aroostook Softball status her sophomore year.
Stevens is a member of the National Honor Society, Dollars for Scholars, and Student Council. She attended Maine Youth Leadership her sophomore year and Dirigo Girls’ State her junior year. She was recently named the recipient of the Aroostook League Senior Scholar Athlete award. She has also received many academic awards and some regional awards.
Stevens is employed at Vacationland Estates and Craig’s Clam Shop. She will be attending Colby-Sawyer College in the fall majoring in biology with plans of becoming a veterinarian.
Lindsay, the daughter of Lance and Kim Lindsay, is a member of the National Honor Society, participating in the American Red Cross Blood Drive. She participated in band her freshmen and sophomore years, has managed both boys/girls basketball teams and girls softball team.
Lindsay has been the recipient of many academic awards, receiving certificate of merit for three years for excellence in science and mathematics by the
Society of Women Engineers; and attained academic excellence in the Bridge Year program at UMA. She was selected and attended Dirigo Girls State. Lindsay is also a certified nurses aid, certified in both CPR and First Aid. She is employed at Oakfield Thriftway.
Lindsay will attend Husson University in the fall studying for her nursing degree.
Crandall, the daughter of Joshua and Nichole Crandall, is a member of the National Honor Society. She has managed basketball and received various awards during her high school career. She also attended the Rotary Luncheon where she was recognized for her academics.
Crandall is employed at Whitey’s Market. She will attend the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the fall for nursing.
