A new drinking fountain in the lobby of the Aroostook General Hospital was dedicated Thursday evening. The fountain, a gift to the hospital by its Free Bed and Aid Association, was dedicated to 'perpetuate the memory of a faithful and devoted member, Miss Helen C. Mitchell.' The ceremony was conducted by Mrs. Harry Bass, a past president of the Association. Pictured at the new fountain are Mrs. Leland Ludwig III and her daughter Cathy. Mrs. Ludwig is a niece of the late Miss Mitchell and her only living relative in this area. (File photo/1967)

100 Years Ago – May 23, 1917

    New job — Jos. Hatch has resigned as electrician for the Bangor & Aroostook and accepted a similiar postion with the Aroostook Telephone Co. He began his new duties on Monday.

    Celebration — Houlton celebrated as Ex-President William H. Taft was the guest of honor at A Gala Day for Houlton. May 16 and 17 will long be remembered by the citizens of Houlton who had an opportunity to listen to Judge William H. Taft of Yale University New Haven, Conn., who addressed over 600 people in the Opera House.

75 Years Ago – May 21, 1942

    Scholarship — Miss Elsa Bostrom, younger daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Earl G. Bostrom, a senior at Houlton High School, this week received notice of an award of a $100 scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music, of Boston. It is one of six such scholarships awarded to high school graduates in the New England states.

    Elected — Lawrence A. Briggs was elected president of the Houlton Fire Department at a special meeting May 18. B. M. Wetmore was elected secretary and treasurer, replacing Emerald Barker, who resigned by reason of defense duties.

50 Years Ago – May 24 , 1967

    New principal — During a special meeting of the Board of Directors of School Administrative District 29, the board announced that Elwood H. Scott would be appointed principal of Houlton High School and that Lloyd R. Chase had been named full-time assistant principal. J. Rodney Coffin, who had been serving as principal of the senior high school, will resume his former duties as instructor in the school’s science department. The move was made at the request of Mr. Coffin.

    Honored —Mrs. Jennie Fleming, who was celebrating her 80th birthday, was honored at a surprise party Saturday evening at the Littleton Full Gospel Assembly with many friends and relatives attending. She was given a money tree and three decorated cakes.

25 Years Ago – May 20, 1992

   Entertainment — SAD 29 string students Peter Bates, Matthew Boutillier, Jonathan Pottle and Milissa Pottle entertained crowds during the seventh annual Suzuki Solo Ensemble Recital at the Houlton High School.

   New School underway — Della Shaw, State Board of Education; SAD 29 Chairman, Betty Childers; Sen. Margaret Ludwig, R-Houlton; SAD 29 Superintendent Bill McDonnell; Doug Witney, WBRC Architects in Bangor; and Rep. Nason Grahan, D-Houlton, gathered to celebrate the ground breaking of Houlton Middle Elementary School last Thursday.
