102 Years Ago – June 3, 1915
PIHS baccalaureate graduation — The annual baccalaureate services before the Seniors of Presque Isle High School were held in Perry Theatre May 30, and were attended by over 1,000 people. The class of 1915 numbers 37, the largest which had ever graduated from the school, and the students made a very pleasing appearance as they marched into the theatre and took the seats reserved for them. Roy Tweedie acted as marshall.
Business sold — Lee Ferguson sold his picture show business to C. W. Sylvester, who took charge on June 1st.
75 Years Ago – May 28, 1942
DeMelo first Aroostook WAAC candidate — Recruiting for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps’ first officer Candidate School had begun, the War Department announced it would be handled exclusively by the Regular Army recruiting stations throughout the country. Mrs. Stella DeMelo, of the county, was the first Aroostook woman to apply for the school. The term of enrollment was for the duration of the war and for not more than six months thereafter.
Presque Isle Girl Scouts have banquet — Girl Scout Troop No. 2 observed Father and Daughter Night with a banquet at the Congregational Church. The banquet was served by members of the troop committee: Mrs. Deasey O’Donnell, Mrs. Byron Titcomb, Mrs. Harry Stephenson, Mrs. Charles Fox and Mrs. Theodore Murphy. Scouts Barbara Dunn and Betty Greenier were in charge of table setting and waitresses.
50 Years Ago – May 31, 1967
John Reed to address graduation — The Honorable John H. Reed of the National Transportation and Safety Board, Washington, D.C., former governor of Maine, was chosen to be the commencement speaker at Aroostook State College in Wieden Hall Auditorium. A native of Fort Fairfield and a graduate of the University of Maine, he received an honorary Doctor of Law Degree from that institution in 1960.
U-M tennis player — Floyd Libby of Presque Isle was a member of the University of Maine Freshman tennis team, which concluded its season with three wins and one loss. The Bear Cubs defeated Maine Central Institute and the Colby Freshmen twice and dropped a 6-3 decision to the Bowdoin Frosh.
25 Years Ago – May 27, 1992
Farm Credit re-appointed Lovley — Carl Lovley of Mapleton was re-elected to a three-year term as director of Farm Credit of Aroostook by stockholders of the cooperative. Lovley Farms in Mapleton where he produced 400 acres of potatoes under the name Carl Lovley Farms Inc. He served as a director of Farm Credit of Aroostook for six years and vice chairman of the board, as well as director of the Maine Potato Growers Inc., director of the Agricultural Bargaining Council, and the Potato Marketing Improvement Fund (PMIF) Project Review Committee.
