HOULTON, Maine — The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is predicting a 37 percent growth in employment in information security analysts by 2022. Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity will be prepared to fill these new positions as well as a predicted gap in Maine’s IT workforce.
University College at Houlton provides access to the bachelor’s program in cybersecurity through the University of Maine Augusta (UMA). The cybersecurity program is a partnership between UMA, University of Maine Fort Kent, the University of Maine at Orono, and the University of Southern Maine.
The program incorporates a multidisciplinary perspective through a combination of courses that offer a holistic approach to cybersecurity education by providing the opportunity to take courses not only in computer science and technology but also in the humanities, social sciences and ethics (for example, crisis communication, human communication skills, philosophy of social media, and security). A post-baccalaureate option is also available. Required courses can be taken completely online, or through a combination of live, online and Instructional Television classes. Cybersecurity is an evolving discipline that involves the study of strategy, policy, and standards regarding the security of and operations in cyberspace. The program will prepare students for career opportunities or advanced education in the cybersecurity field including positions in security analysis, information assurance, digital forensics, intelligence, and cyber defense to name a few.
The curriculum has been designed to meet the stringent academic standards of the NSA/DHS jointly sponsored Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense (CAEIA/CD) program.
The program in cybersecurity is the first ever system-collaborated degree program to be recognized by the CAEIA/CD.
University College has a system-wide mission to provide centralized services to students and faculty engaged in online and distance programs offered by the campuses of the University of Maine System.
University College operates centers at Brunswick, East Millinocket, Ellsworth, Houlton, South Paris, Rockland, Mexico, and Saco, which allows students access to over 100 certificate and degree programs from the University of Maine System. Students access the resources of campuses while studying online, at their local center, or pursuing a mix of online and traditional instruction while staying close to home.
