Kidder headed to San Francisco — Edmund J. Kidder, son of Mrs. Geneva Kidder and a grandson of Register of Deeds, Jas. H. Kidder, Houlton, successfully passed his June examinations at the U.S. Naval Academy and left with the other three classes on the U.S. Missouri for San Francisco and the Exposition, via Panama Canal.
Enlisting in the Canadian contingent — Howard Fowler, a brother of F. J. Fowler, had enlisted in the Canadian contingent.
75 Years Ago – June 4, 1942
Whitney appointed — Mrs. Harry N. Whitney, a past Worthy Matron of Lunar Chapter, No. 126, order of the Eastern Star, of Presque Isle, was appointed District Deputy grand Matron of District No. 20. Mrs. Whitney’s appointment was made May 27 at the session of the Grand Chapter of Maine in Portland.
Rotary ladies night — The annual ladies night program of the Rotary Club was held at the Northeastland Hotel with members of the Washburn Club and their wives as special guests. Percy R. Winslow was toastmaster in the absence of Dr. R. A. Graves, president.
50 Years Ago – June 7, 1967
C of C ad campaign — Aubrey Briggs, executive manager of the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce, reported that the chamber had begun a major advertising campaign to “strengthen the Northeast’s All America Star City’s position as Aroostook’s number one shopping center.” Presque Isle area merchants, “long known for their friendly service,” were offering the shopping public “the finest array of better values in brand name merchandise to be found anywhere,” Briggs declared.
Dana Street elected — At the Annual County Convention held in Presque Isle at the Ray Goding Post, American Legion, Dana Street, long active in American Legion affairs, was elected County Commander for the coming year.
25 Years Ago – June 3, 1992
$3.33 Million Wal-Mart under construction — Wal-Mart’s newest store, a $3.33 million project, is under construction on North Main Street in Presque Isle. crews from Fred McGillen and Co. of Fort Fairfield began preparing the site, on the former Potato Equipment Corp. lot, for construction. According to Tim Levine, general manager of the Lewiston-based Sheridan Corp., his company hoped to have the entire project complete by fall, and certainly in time for Christmas shopping.
New Recycling Center — Presque Isle’s new recycling center held its grand opening May 27. The facility, located in a hangar on Missile Street near the Converse plant, was built primarily from state grant funds.
