HERSEY, Maine – Frederick Wheaton Bates, 82, left this world May 27, 2017, at Houlton. He was born August 18, 1934 in Moro, the son of Vane and Beryl (Fleming) Bates.
Fred graduated from Patten Academy, Class of 1953. Following school, Fred served with the US Army where he was in the Infantry stationed in Germany. After returning home Fred married the love of his life, Gladys “Pee Wee” Gallagher on December 24, 1960. Together they raised five children. Fred was a very hard worker all his days. Throughout his years he worked in several different industries, including being a butcher, a logger, and a mechanic. He was an avid outdoorsman from childhood, earning the nickname “Deadeye” early on. He spent his free time hunting, fishing and camping, almost always with his family in tow.
He is survived by four children, Brent Bates of Hersey, Angela Roy of Patten Fred Bates of Patten and Monica (Soloman) Shaw of Hersey; his grandchildren, Robert Bates, Lacaylea Roy, Shiloh Shaw, Shannon Shaw, Cassie Shaw and Chase Bates. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife; his son, Stacy Bates and brother Wesley Bates.
