PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – McDonnell ‘Mac’ Smith of Presque Isle, Maine, passed away unexpectedly on June 1st, 2017. Mac was born in Detroit, MI, on March 31st, 1953, son of the late William George Smith and Sheila McDonnell Smith of Birmingham, MI.
He was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Nancy Lee Smith. Mac was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and he was known for his work ethic and outgoing personality; he could talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Growing up in Detroit, MI, it is no surprise that it was rumored that Mac could walk and talk in full sentences by 9 months old.
Those left to cherish his memories include his son, Tyler Smith and his wife Margaret of Waterville, ME, and their three children, Katie Scarlett, Poppy Ballerina, Ruby Aurora; his daughter, Shannon Lee Smith of Gardiner, ME, and her daughter, Avery Lee. He also is survived by his sister, Maureen Christensen and her husband, Tim of Birmingham, MI; his brother, Christopher Smith and his wife, Kerry of Slidell, LA; his sister, Tracy Pryce and her husband, Dave of Grand Rapids, MI; his brother, Cormac Smith and his wife, Lisa of Grand Rapids, MI; his “favorite” mother-in-law, Marion Bates of Bradenton, FL; his brother-in-law, Christopher Bates and his wife, Jeanne of Bradenton, FL; his sister-in-law, Laurie Wood and her husband, Tom of Barton, VT; his sister-in-law, Kimberly Corey and her husband, John of Farmington, CT; several nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
A graduate of the Catholic School educational system, Mac was a self-made man and award-winning salesman who spent his life working hard to earn a living and provide the very best for his family. He reinvented himself many times living in Michigan, Arizona, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine; and he paid the bills working as a bartender, waterbed business owner, radio ad salesman and owner, and most recently as a franchise owner of his beloved “Coffee News.” In his early life, he was an accomplished swimmer and motorcycle enthusiast; a passion he selflessly traded in exchange for a life as a husband to Nancy and father to his two beautiful children. Mac loved talk radio and the Detroit tigers, was an avid gun collector and enjoyed going to the shooting range. He was famous for “butt-dialing” all his family and friends and he was known for daily check-in calls to let everyone know what he was having for dinner.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for Saturday, June 10th, 2017 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle, ME. Beginning promptly at 5:30 p.m. Pastor Rupert (Bud) Fancy will officiate a brief ceremony. Mac and his wife, Nancy were supporters of Hospice Services.
