Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, May 23 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speaker was Gil Nkamwesiga, assistant pastor at the Mars Hill United Baptist Church.
Gil was born in Uganda. After his dad left, he, his mom, sister and brother had to struggle for everything. They lived in a tent for three years before his mom was able to move them into a two-room home. He lost his brother after he was bitten by a rabid dog. His sister was able to go to school on scholarships and is now an attorney.
Gil met his future wife Amanda in 2006 when she came to Uganda to work with Word of Life. They met again when she returned to Uganda on a medical mission trip, this time with her own mom. Following a long-distance courtship, Amanda finally agreed to marry Gil.
He came to the U.S. in May 2012, landing in New York City. He thought the country was just like TV shows indicated, but began to change his mind once he headed for northern Maine. He had never seen so many trees in his life.
On June 16, 2012, the couple exchanged vows at Bigrock. They returned to Uganda with Word of Life, where their daughter Charis was born, returning to the U.S. when Amanda was expecting their second child. She arrived first, with Gil following once his papers were in order.
Their second child, Andrew was born in August 2016 with a heart defect. By God’s grace, Andrew received his perfect heart in Boston on October 1. He is now home and doing very well, although he will be checked frequently.
Gil and Amanda praised the Lord through each milestone and gave God the glory for watching over Andrew.
The next week, May 30, Rotarians heard guest speaker Stacy Shaw, who has been with MMG since 1998, speak about his recent trip to Greece.
After talking to some of the locals about what route to take, he and four others spent one day climbing Mt. Olympus, not quite getting to the top with an elevation of 9,500 feet. It was early enough in the year that there was still some snow to slow them down. They started at 5:30 a.m. and were still a couple of hours from the top when they needed to start back down. They were 9 hours going up and 5 coming back down. There were some great views of the Aegean Sea once they got above the tree line.
While in Greece, they also traveled a bit, saw a lot of sites and enjoyed the local foods.
