100 Years Ago – June 13, 1917
New position — Mr. R. K. Dunbar of Skowhegan has accepted a position in the Job Department of the TIMES Publishing Company.
Purchasers — Chas. A. Sleeper of Sherman Mills and C. W. Starkey the local market man, are last week’s purchasers of Hollier Eights.
75 Years Ago – June 11, 1942
Ball game — A baseball game, the first of its kind in Houlton, will find two teams composed of soldiers stationed at the Houlton Air Base pitted against each other Sunday at Community Park. One team is made up of members of the 314th Materiel Squadron and the other nine have been selected from the membership of the 20th Ferry Squadron. Both teams boast several former semi-pro stars in their line-ups.
Courses — The University of Maine offers seven war-training courses to high school graduates who do not plan to do regular college work. These seven courses are in the fields of radio communication, materials of engineering and inspection, machine tool engineering, welding engineering, surveying and mapping, structural drafting, and analytical chemistry.
50 Years Ago – June 14 , 1967
Retiring — Mrs. Esther Grendell is retiring this week after 25 years of teaching, the last 20 of which have been in the elementary school in Houlton. She is a native of Presque Isle and was graduated from Aroostook State Normal School and began teaching in Mapleton.
Anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Cumming were honored at a family dinner party given by their children on the occasion of their 50 wedding anniversary. They received guests in the Elm Room of the Northland Hotel. They were married in Houlton on June 6, 1917.
25 Years Ago – June 10, 1992
Surprise dedication — Students from the class of 1996 at Houlton Junior-Senior High School collected bottles and cans to purchase a blue spruce tree dedicated to science teacher Oden Cassidy. Cassidy taught the students to be conscious of preserving the environment through recycling.
Attend school symposium — Pavan Surapeneni, Kristen Vose, Sarah Porter and Jamie Sewell, accompanied by instructor Rueline Geishecker, attended the 1992 ASTA Cello ‘Cellobration’ at Skowhegan Area High School and Bloomfield Academy on May 30.
