Island Falls News
By Becky Drew, correspondent
Warren Brooks, son of the late Raymond and Jeannette Brooks of Island Falls, recently made a generous contribution to the King Mitchell VFW Post 7529 for needed building updates and maintenance.
This contribution is in remembrance of three family members who served in the military — father Raymond in the U.S. Army and brothers Raymond and Daniel in the U.S. Navy, all during wartime. Let’s not forget the service of all our veterans who have fought, are fighting and will fight for our freedom. Thanks.
Visiting with Dennis and Becky Drew and family in the area for the month of June are son Adam and children Dennis and Dalia from Los Alamos, New Mexico.
The River Cafe’s ice cream summer hours will begin this week. Both soft serve and Houlton Farms hard ice cream are available as well as the usual treats made with each. Hours will be Wednesday through Sunday 12-8.
Happy Losers
By Shirley Sides, correspondent
On June 7, the first Wednesday of the month, the weight group called the Happy Losers held its weekly meeting at the United Baptist Church vestry in Island Falls. The leader opened the meeting and welcomed members, followed by the pledge and roll call.
Ten members weighed-in and eight attended the meeting. Jackie Pratt was the loser of the week and dotty rand was runner-up. Great job, ladies. Reports were given by the secretary and treasurer for the week.
The leader led the program for the week and her topic was on cinnamon. There are three different kinds, which some of us didn’t know. Jane Fitzgerald has returned to class for the summer. Jan Greely will be returning soon.
Our summer outing will be June 28 at the Brookside. Please feel welcome to our group every Wednesday. Weigh-ins from 8-8:30 a.m. and the meeting starts at 8:30. See you there. Call 365-4884 for more information.

Alright, three weeks in one article, because I was on vacation. The weekly meeting of the TOPS 0233 Houlton was held Frida,y June 9. There were 12 TOPS and 4 KOPS members present.
The Loser of the Week was Diane Folsom and the runner-up was Brenda Lacostic. The secretary’s report was given by Millie Gagnon, Brenda Lacostic won the 50/50 and Cleo won the Skinny Dish.
Our contest has one more week to go and thanks to Cheryl Driscoll, our butterflies are getting more and more colorful, as we keep losing. Our goals are getting closer as the weeks go by. We discussed the workshop held Saturday, how it went for us and congratulated each other on our success.
The program was presented by Jean Merritt “No Excuses or Every Excuse.” Losing weight is a mental game. Do we eat this or healthier that? Do we exercise regularly or is it hot/cold…and so on. Jean’s article gave us a lot to think about, and how to learn to turn it around.
We’d love to see new members,so you too, can “turn yourself around”. come join us every Friday Morning. For more information or directions to our meeting site, Call Pam Richardson at 538-8760

Our contest is going great. We have two weeks left. Our butterflies are getting more colorful as we lose, at least a little. The Skinny dish was won by Jean Merritt and the 50/50 was won by Cleo. Money in their pockets.
After our regular meeting, we went to Watson hall to prepare for the workshop to be held tomorrow, June 3. I’ll let you know how many attended next week. Area TOPS chapters are invited to attend. Hoping for a large turnout. So until next week, this is Pam signing off. For more information of TOPS or for directions to our meeting place, Call Pam Richardson.
