PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Students from Pine Street and Zippel Elementary Schools recently assisted Norogala Show Ribbons of Presque Isle with a recycling contest.

Students from Pine Street and Zippel Elementary Schools collected inner cardboard tubes from bathroom tissue and paper towel rolls for two weeks. Norogala staff used the rolls to help pack ribbons for shipment to help prevent the ribbons from slipping and wrinkling.
Bathroom tissue rolls were worth one point and paper towel rolls were worth two points. The top three classes at Zippel were Mrs. Buck’s class with 1792 points, Mrs. Norsworthy’s class with 1197 points and Mrs. Hoffses’ class with 489 points. From Pine Street, Mrs. Daniels’ class had 1107 points, Mrs. Wright’s class has 772 points and Mrs. Clukey’s class had 714 points.
Melissa DeMerchant, manager of Norogala Show Ribbons, said the response from both schools was overwhelming. “It’s a good thing we only did two weeks of collecting! Nearly 5,000 rolls were collected between the two schools respectively. The students did an outstanding job helping us and the classrooms were very competitive! Not only did the students learn about recycling, but it also helped them with math (adding points each day in the classroom) as well as working together as a team. I’d like to thank all of the families, faculty, and students who helped make this project a success.”
The top-scoring classroom in each school received a pizza party from the Presque Isle Rosella’s Restaurant. All students received a participant ribbon and the top three classrooms from each school received a custom first, second and third ribbon.
