Presque Isle Youth Hockey player earns William J. Smith Award

The William J. Smith Award is given annually to a peewee hockey player in the Presque Isle Youth Hockey league.

It is not necessarily presented to the best player on the team, but to the player demonstrating the spirit of sportsmanship and who, in the opinion of the coaches, shows outstanding dedication to the sport of hockey. William “Bill” Smith showed dedication to the sport through his many years of coaching and officiating, beginning in the mid-1960’s at the indoor rink housed in what is now Presque Isle’s Industrial Park. Christopher Smith, right, William Smith’s son, presents this year’s award to Quinn DeMerchant, a Presque Isle Middle School student and the son of Ray and Sherrie DeMerchant of Presque Isle.
