Graves and Beckum lead way in Collins 5K

CARIBOU, Maine — Veteran runners Evan Graves and Marie Beckum cruised to the fastest times in the S.W. Collins 5K Road Race, held Sunday, June 15. 

The race was the third in this year’s County Challenge Series.

The 35-year-old Graves, who resides in Caribou, captured first place overall with a time of 16 minutes and 35.3 seconds. He was just 6-1/2 seconds ahead of runner-up Isaiah Brown of Houlton (16:41.8). Past champion Curtis Wheeler of New Sweden was third with a time of 16:58.2.

Marie Beckum, 31, also of Caribou, led the way in the women’s division. Her time of 20:41.1 gave her 13th overall out of the 46-runner field. She outpaced Ashley Violette of Caribou, a 16-year-old who was the women’s runner-up in 21:21.4, and Gabrielle Wheeler of New Sweden, who took third in 22:01.4.

The overall top 10 after Graves, Brown and Wheeler included, fourth, Dylan Marrero, 17:29.8; fifth, Evan Desmond, 18:34.6; sixth, Mike Waugh, 19:14.8; seventh, James Cyr, 19:37.5; eighth, Bruce Clark, 19:49.2; ninth, Kyle Boucher, 19:58.6; and 10th, Thomas Beckum, 20:22.1.

Melanie Reese was the fastest walker, coming in at 41:54.4. Nine other walkers participated.

Age division winners were: 14-and-under females, Kayley Bell, 23:08.1; 14-and-under males, James Cherrier, 29:58.4; 15-18 females, Violette; 15-18 males, Brown; 19-29 females, Katie Frei, 22:07.6; 19-29 males, Ben Rosser, 20:34.1; 30-39 females, M. Beckum; 30-39 males, Graves; 40-49 females, Angela Ewings, 22:36.8; 40-49 males, T. Beckum; 50-59 females, Reese; 50-59 males, Clark; 60-69 females, Nadeen Plourde (walker), 42:03.8; 60-69 males, Ed Malone, 24:50.8; 70-and-over males, Dave Samuelian, 28:37.5.

A Kids Fun Run was also held as part of the event. The top finishers were: boys’ 4-years-old and under, Tommy Flannery; girls’ 4 and under, Scarlett Beckum; boys’ 5-6, Andrew Rosser; girls’ 5-6, Emma Graves; boys’ 7-8, Chandler St. Peter; girls’ 7-8, Breanna Royer; girls’ 9-10, Teanne Ewings; and boys’ 11-12, Aedan Bourgoine.

The next County Challenge Series race is the Musterd Mile on July 7 in Caribou. Registration begins at 6 p.m. at Caribou High School, with the downhill mile, ending near Monica’s Scandinavian Gift Shop, beginning at 7 p.m. There are no fees, “just a chance to set a personal record for the mile,” according to race director P.J.
