100 Years Ago – June 27, 1917
New position — Henry Nelson has accepted a position with the Great Northern Paper Co., and will take charge of one of their pulp operations at Monticello. Mr. Nelson has been associated several years with E. G. Bryson in his lumber operations.
Railroad — Pres. Maxfield of the Eastern Maine Railroad was in Houlton, Friday, on a business trip. The surveys and other work connected with the road is progressing very satisfactorily according to Mr. Maxfield.
75 Years Ago – June 25, 1942
Studies — Miss Ruth Carpenter, Houlton High School, class of 1942, who is employed with the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corporation in Hartford, Conn., is now attending the Billings and Spencer School of the Pratt & Whitney Corporation. She is taking a five weeks course in blue printing and cutter binding, being paid by the company while attending school.
Meeting — Dr. Earl G. Bostrom attended a meeting of the board of the Maine State Chiropractors Association in Augusta Saturday. He was accompanied by his daughter, Miss Elsa Bostrom, and Miss Arlene Taylor, Washburn street.
50 Years Ago – June 28, 1967
Grand marshal — Governor Kenneth M. Curtis will be the grand marshal in the parade Tuesday morning that features the American Legion’s annual Fourth of July celebration in Houlton. George McGillicuddy, Democratic town chairman, said the Governor has accepted an invitation to take part in the parade, and that he will be the guest of honor at a special luncheon that day.
Doctorate — Jacqueline A. Clifford of Bloomington, Ind. formerly of Houlton, was the recipient of a Doctorate of Physical Education Degree at Indiana State University on June 12. She is the daughter of Lt. and Mrs. Forrest Clifford of Stillwater.
25 Years Ago – June 24, 1992
New members — At the Katahdin High School academic awards picnic, new members inducted into the National Honor Society are sophomores Beth Bagley and Dan Engroff along with juniors, Lisa Gonya and Oden Willigan.
National award — The Houlton Water Company has received national recognition for its efforts to reforest 25 acres near the town’s major water well in Hodgdon.The American Public Power Association presented the Houlton Water Company its Golden Tree Award during APPA’s National Conference in Washington D.C.
