HOULTON, Maine — Runners and walkers turned out in droves Friday evening to help raise money for childhood cancer during the LP Miracle Mile Road Race.
The race was created in memory of Makenna Ward, the daughter of Kirk and Amy Ward of Houlton who lost her battle to cancer at the age of 6. Proceeds from the race are used to bring awareness and raise funding for Childhood Cancer and Diamond Blackfan Anemia.
A field of 250 runners and walkers participated in this year’s event, making it the largest to date.
“This is the biggest draw we have ever had,” Kirk Ward said. “I am so overwhelmed and proud. The commitment that our community has shown year after year. It’s incredible. We had 250 people and that means 250 children whose lives may be changed. We really appreciate the support and we certainly don’t take it for granted.”
