100 Years Ago – July 4, 1917
New position — Miss Ruby Barker, teacher of domestic science at the Houlton High School, wet to Orono, Friday, for a special course of work at the U. of M. She has accepted a lucrative demonstration position for the summer.
Bank — Geo. B. Dunn of this town has been elected one of the directors of the recently organized Trust Company at Ashland. This new banking institution will open up for business about September 1.
75 Years Ago – July 2, 1942
Old tires — Ten tons of scrap rubber has been turned in to the Standard Oil Company’s filling station, according to Thomas Hoar, manager of the station. Several local boys proved that discarded rubber can be obtained at a little effort. One ton of old tires were obtained by Byron Mitchell and Rollie Wilkins from the Mattawamkeag River in back of and below the Island Falls Garage. Ted Brooks, Gerald and John Emery took another ton from the Mattawamkeag River near the bridge on the Patten road.
Rotary — Edwin Arnold, manager of the F. W. Woolworth store here, became the new president of the Houlton Rotary Club Monday when he was inducted into office by the retiring president, W. J. Strout. Mr. Strout was presented with a past president’s pin by Arthur O. Putnam in appreciation for his year of service to the club.
50 Years Ago – July 5 , 1967
Honored — Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Baker were honored at an open house June 25 in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary. Frank E. Baker and Hazel A. Stevens were married in 1917 at Houlton by the Rev. T. P. Williams, then pastor of the Congregational Church.
Local debaters — High School debaters from this area are among participants in a High School Debate Institute at the University of Maine in Orono June 26 to July 7. Attending from this area: Daniel Daigle of Houlton, Randy Erb of Castine, James Bouvier of Bucksport, Carol Ciaravino of Owl’s Head, Ilene Sue Wittner of Bangor and Margaret McPartland of Houlton.
25 Years Ago – July 1, 1992
Grand opening — The VIP Discount Auto Center on the North Road held its grand opening last Saturday. A few who attended the ribbon cutting ceremony were: Thomas Auger, owner, president; Mike Sweeney, vice president of operations, David Hunt, vice president of distribution-purchasing; Chuck Sarchi, purchasing; Janet McCarthy, marketing director; Dick Collet, supervisor; Glenn Strait, inventory control, Phil Dickenson, store manager and Blake Buck, Buck Construction along with VIP staff.
Awards — On May 1, Aroostook County’s Special Olympics were held at the Forum in Presque Isle. Elisha Blum-Evitts, a second grader at Patten Primary School, won a silver medal in the 50 meter competition and gold medal in the 100 meter event. She also won a ribbon for her fourth place finish in the softball throw.
