102 Years Ago – July 8, 1915

The Hardy Hill auto contest — In the Hardy Hill auto contest, the Buick run by T. F. Phair won the prize. The time was 42 seconds. The Maxwell was second, 47 5-8, and was run by Floyd McGlauflin.

People’s Pharmacy — The display window of the People’s Pharmacy attracted a good deal of attention. A large tank with running water had been put in and several fish were deposited, among them being two Albino salmon, which were hatched at the Caribou Hatchery.

75 Years Ago – July 2, 1942

Day elected — Walter t. Day of Caribou was elected State Commander of the American Legion at Old Orchard. The Caribou hotelman was the first Aroostook man to win the honor Percy Winslow and Olin Porter were delegates from this city at the convention. Sila Hansen was in charge of the potato float in the parade.

Farmers get more — Maine farmers received in 1941 nearly $21,700,000 more for their principal crops than in 1940, according to final tabulation of the Maine Crop and Livestock Review, Charles M. White, Chief Division of Markets. The total value of the principal crops produced in 1941 on the basis of preliminary prices for the 1941 marketing season was estimated at $48,787,000 as compared the $27,117,000 for the 1940 crops, White said.

50 Years Ago – July 5, 1967

To help pool project — Queen Lioness Margaret Damore of the Mapleton Lionettes presented King Lion Elbridge Lovley  of the Mapleton Lions Club a check for $350 to be used toward the new swimming pool project.

At U. M. Music Workshop — Several high school musicians from this area were among the 60 youngsters who attended the University of Maine Music Roundup June 18 to 30. Two Friday evening concerts climaxed the intensive round of rehearsals for band, orchestra, chorus and ensembles which were part of the roundup. In the group from this area were Laurell Cooney and Bruce Smith both of Presque Isle; Claudia Turmel and Susan Larlee  both of of Millinocket.

25 Years Ago – July 1, 1992

Grand opening — The Central Aroostook Humane Society held a June 28 grand opening of its newly constructed building, a state-of-the-art animal shelter, located across the street from its old building on Skyway Industrial Park. President, Debi-Jo Woodlan said the 40-foot by 80-foot structure more than capable of housing up to 50 animals, made possible by a generous gift from Glenda M. and Oscar H. Tagget, a year and a half in the planning and building.

Duncan MTCS trustee — Margaret Cook Duncan of Presque Isle, president of Cook Florist Inc., past president of Maine Florists’ Association, director of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club and the Battered Women’s Project in Caribou and Houlton, and a member of the Literacy Volunteers and the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, joined the board of trustees of the Maine Technical College System. She replaced Carl Smith.
