FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Many sporting activities are being planned during the 70th Maine Potato Blossom Festival.
A horseshoe tournament will be held at Riverside Park on Saturday, July 8, at a cost of $10 per player or $20 per team. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top two finishers and a barbecue will be held on site.
On Tuesday, July 11, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held at the community center gym. Individuals 16 years of age and older are eligible to compete in the double-elimination event, which gets underway at 6 p.m. The entry fee is $30 per team. The annual swim meet involving recreation department teams will take place at the municipal swimming pool Wednesday, July 12, beginning at 9 a.m. The rain date is Friday, July 14. Call 472-3883 for more information.
The junior girls softball tournament for players ages 9-12 will be at the Fort Fairfield Middle High School Sports Complex Thursday, July 13, with recreation department teams from throughout central and northern Aroostook County competing.
The three-person scramble golf tourney will be played at the Aroostook Valley Country Club on Saturday, July 15. The minimum team handicap is 30. Call 476-8083 to sign up.
The annual Potato Blossom 5-Miler road race begins at 8:30 a.m. for walkers and 9 a.m. for runners, also on Saturday, July 15. It begins and ends across from Hillside IGA on Main Street. Registration gets underway at 7:30 a.m. and the cost is $15, with a T-shirt going to the first 70 to sign up. Call Rob Langner at 227-6075 for more information.
The 25-mile Spud Cycle Classic bicycle race and tour will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 16. A 12-miler is offered to those between the ages of 13 and 15. Registration is from 8-9:30 a.m. at the community center. The cost is $15, which includes a T-shirt for the first 50 entrants. The Floatilla of Fun on the Aroostook also is scheduled for Sunday, July 16, beginning at 2 p.m. Canoes and kayaks will depart from Forbes’ Landing and finish up at Giggey’s Landing, which is just after the bridge. Participants need to wear a lifejacket. Canoe and kayak rentals are available through Kayak Country by calling 540-6573.
