HOULTON, Maine — A group of local citizens is developing a “Center for Seniors” in Houlton to serve the Southern Aroostook area.
It is an idea whose time has come and when the Putnam Charitable Trust offered the grand old house at 105 North St. for the center, the Putnam House Board of Directors began their work.
“As with anything worth doing, it takes time and resources,” said Jennifer Sylvester, secretary for the Putnam House group. “There is passion to restore the old home and practical thinking to replace it. In the meantime, the board wants to start providing a temporary place for our seniors now.”
To that end, Tuesday, July 18, from 8 a.m. to noon, at First Baptist Church on Court Street, the summer home of the Putnam House Center for Seniors will open. Every Tuesday until further notice the center will be available for coffee and donuts, fellowship, games, puzzles.
The first gathering will include cribbage boards and instruction by Torrey Sylvester.
“There is an elevator on the center front of the building with a buzzer to call for it,” Jennifer Sylvester said. “Use the lower north door for a walking entrance and come down the steps into the Ladies Parlor. Just follow the smell of coffee. We will have a questionnaire for you to complete if you wish, giving your ideas and opinions. This center is for you and we want it to meet your needs as much as possible. We hope you come and bring your friends.”
If anyone wants to get involved, volunteer to bake, supervise, teach, etc. please contact Jennifer Sylvester at 532-9361 or any other member of the board.
