Concert — C.P. ussey gave an open air concert with his phonograph on the lawn of High street Sunday evening. The music attracted a large audience and could be heard from some distance
Winner — Caribou distinguished herself at the celebration at Presque Isle July 4, by winning both events in which she had participants. H.A. Edwards won the automobile race and “Sweepstakes,” owned by David Prossor, won first money in the 2:40 class.
100 Years Ago – Jul. 12, 1917
Around town — W.P. Hamilton and family started by automobile Sunday on a trip to Massachusetts, Miss Ada Doyle was given a birthday surprise party Saturday afternoon at the old fish hatchery grounds by a number of her young friends.
75 Years Ago – Jul. 8, 1942
Record load –A truckload of scrap rubber was hauled early this week from Washburn to the Socony Oil Plant on Main Street in Caribou. The load weighed 630 pounds and was gathered by H.A. Leonard of Washburn. Scrap rubber thus collected by oil distributors in this area is handled at no profit.
Peas and potatoes — Frank Erickson, Spring Street gardiner claims his garden pea production record this year exceeds any of previous years, as far as he can recollect. For the July 4 market this year, he gathered 33 pecks from his healthy looking rows, which were handled mostly by local stores and regular customers. He claims the recent rains brought remarkable growth to his early potatoes, having dug some the size of his fist.
50 Years Ago – Jul. 12, 1967
Funds — Confirmation that federal funds are available for the planning of the Urban Renewal project in Caribou have been set aside by telegram from U.S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie to Charles Hatch, town manager, Tuesday. The word was that $133,505 is now available for planning and an additional $890,000 has been set aside for use in the project. Elated by the news, the town manager said it means planning can be undertaken immediately, although it will take about a year.
Free TV? — Anybody for a free TV? There’s one available for the asking, and Chief of Police Rufus Bernard is the man to see. The only requirement to obtain the set, a console model, is to be able to identify it well enough to prove ownership. The TV was found in a clump of bushes at the roadside just across the railroad tracks at Axel Siding in Stockholm. The TV set was taken to home by a state highway department employee named Skidgel, as it remains only to find the owner.
25 Years Ago – Jul. 8, 1992
McCormack named — John J. McCormack, executive director of Cary Medical Center, has been recertified as a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He has served as executive director at Cary Medical Center since 1979.
Retires — Paul J. Michaud of Caribou, superintendent of postal operations at the Caribou Post office for more than 32 years, retired from his career May 1. He was honored a recent retirement party and was presented a service award designating his years of service to the U.S. Postal Service.
