DANFORTH, Maine — This coming Saturday, July 22, will see the first of three sailboat races sponsored by the Peter’s Cove Yacht Club at the northern end of East Grand Lake. The subsequent races will be on Saturday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 19.
Participants (including new sailors) simply need to show up on Half Moon Island between noon and 12:30 p.m. on the day of the race in order to register their boats although they can contact Ted Sussman at emdsussman@gmail.com for more information.
The Peter’s Cove Yacht Club is a loose collection of sailors who come together three times each summer to participate in these sail boat races. The races originally were sponsored by the Chiputneticook Lakes International Conservancy, a not-for-profit group which advocates for those on and around the Upper St. Croix River Watershed’s five Chiputneticook Lakes: North, East Grand, Mud, Spednic and Palfrey, as well as for those on Deering Lake in Orient and Bracket Lake in Weston.
CLIC ceased sponsoring the races after the 2007 regatta. Some of the sailors who had participated in those races decided to continue them, giving themselves the name they currently use because several of them moor their boats in the waters of Peter’s Cove. The Portsmouth Yardstick Handicapping System is used to determine ranking in the race.
