FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Presque Isle’s junior girls’ softball team captured the title in the Maine Potato Blossom Festival tournament by beating Fort Fairfield 8-6 in the finals.
The event, a three-team affair which also included Caribou, was played Thursday, July 13, at the Charlie Lockhart Field. Girls between the ages of 8 and 12 were eligible to compete.
Presque Isle won the championship mostly because of a huge offensive rally in the second inning. Trailing 1-0, PI put seven runs on the board by sending 11 batters to the plate.
Sophia Stephenson, Emily Straetz, Morgan Seward, Ava Stacey, Shai Theriault, Abby Johnston and Bella Quirino all reached base and scored runs during the uprising.
Fort Fairfield came back with four runs in the top of the third and another in the fourth to get back in contention, but PI added a fourth-inning run (scored by Quirino) and Johnston held FF scoreless from the mound over the final two frames.
Camryn Ala reached safely four times and scored two runs to lead Fort Fairfield at the plate.
