SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Carroll B. Richardson passed away peacefully on July 7, 2017. Cal was born on April 16, 1923, in Rome, Maine.
He graduated from Messalonskee High School and went on to the University of Maine where he was a member of the Class of 1944. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Masters degree in agricultural economics. He was a member of the Senior Skull Society, ROTC and a brother in the Phi Eta Kappa fraternity. After graduation he was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant in the Army Air Corp where he learned to fly P-40’s. Learning to fly was one of his favorite accomplishments and he continued to fly whenever possible even after he left the service.
After the war and graduation, Cal took a job as head of potato sales with Maine Potato Growers in Presque Isle and fell in love with “The County” and its people.
Cal married Jean White in 1956 and together they raised three children. He retired in 1983 and began to avidly pursue his passion for golf, which he played until he was 92, and travel. Favorite trips included Russia, China, Gettysburg, and his annual trip to Quebec City with Jean. He loved to read and do crossword puzzles. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan and after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series he said he could die fulfilled.
Cal was respected and loved by many, but most of all he was loved by his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Jean, his parents Beulah and Barton Richardson, his sister Willa McGowan, his brother Maitland Richardson and his daughter-in-law Melissa Richardson. Cal is survived by his children Nancy Richardson Magee and husband Jesse of Scarborough, John Richardson of Scarborough, Jill Richardson and partner Tim Michaud of Brunswick; granddaughters Jenna Richardson of Westbrook, Jillian Magee of Portland, and Emma Michaud of Brunswick; his sister-in-law Sylvia Richardson of Skowhegan and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Scarborough Terrace Assisted Living and Compassus Hospice for their kindness, care and compassion.
Per Cal’s wishes there will be no public service. A private family burial will take place in Presque Isle at a later date.
