Littleton shop gutted in blaze

LITTLETON, Maine — A Littleton repair shop was reduced to rubble and ashes on Sunday evening after a fire ripped through the building, according to the town’s fire chief.

The fire at Peter Schools Truck and Trailer Repair, located on Route 1, started just after 11 p.m., said Dwight Cowperthwaite, chief of the Littleton Fire Department.

The chief said Schools was working in the 3,000 square-foot two bay shop at the time, but that the garage owner was unsure what sparked the blaze. Cowperthwaite said blue styrofoam that coated the upper walls helped to fuel the flames.

“He was able to get out of the building, but he had no idea how it started and the fire spread very quickly,” said the chief. “He lost the business and a great number of his tools. We responded with 20 firefighters and two pumpers and received mutual aid from the Monticello Fire Department.”

Firefighters from both departments spent more than two hours on the scene, extinguishing the blaze and putting out hot spots. The remnants were still smoldering on Monday afternoon.

The shop was assessed by the town at $52,000, said the chief, who believed it was insured.
