Youth hockey players earn awards

Dave Wilson, left, presented Jason Collett with the G. Ivan Wilson Commissioner’s Award for the Southern Aroostook Minor Hockey Association (SAMHA).

The Commissioner’s Award is open to all hockey players in SAMHA’s programs. The recipient of the commissioner’s award must demonstrate character, hard work, the desire to improve, respect, team play, love of the sport, as well as being a good ambassador of the association.

Kanyun McNinch was the recipient of the Tom Matthews Spirit Award. The award is given in memory of Tom Matthews, who was a hockey player, coach and a supporter of youth hockey. The annual award is given to an Atoms player in SAMHA by the vote of Atoms’ parents. The player needs to set goals; demonstrate teamwork; have a good work ethic; be dedicated to work, teammates and friends; be proud of accomplishments; be unselfish; be loyal and committed to family, friends and country; be loving and compassionate to all; show team spirit; be willing to learn, and be dependable. With McNinch is his coach Ritchie Lynds.
