CARIBOU, Maine — A Friday morning fire caused about $5,000 worth of damage to a mobile home at 557 Access Highway, according to a Caribou fire official.
Someone from inside the mobile home called at 9:12 a.m. to report that it was filling with smoke, said Captain Scott Jackson of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department.
“Everyone was outside when we got there,” he said. No one was injured.
Firefighters had to take out windows to ventilate the smoke and tear down a wall to get at the fire, Jackson said, but they were able to clear the scene in just under an hour.
He said they determined the cause to be electrical and the fire is not under investigation.
Fire Chief Scott Susi said on Monday that Lynda Fortin owns the trailer, and that the mobile home was not insured.
“I’d say they probably won’t be in there for a little bit until they get it repaired,” the captain said.
The Red Cross announced that a “disaster action team” would ensure that the five people affected by the fire would have “food, a safe place to sleep, and other essentials.”
The Red Cross plans to remain in contact with the family and assist all involved as they “begin to make their road to recovery.”
The Presque Isle Fire Department provided mutual aid by covering the Caribou Fire and Ambulance station this morning.
