MASARDIS, Maine — Maibec Lumber Inc. recently received renewal of its safety certification from the Maine Department of Labor.
The company was renewed into the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) by MDOL’s Safety Works! and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Roger Gagnon, safety and environmental manager at the Masardis facility, said this is the mill’s fifth SHARP certification since 2006.
“Our 2016 OSHA recordable incident rate was 3.97, and the average for our industry in the U.S. is 7.30,” he said. “Our 2016 lost-time incident rate was 1.70, compared to a 4.10 average in the U.S.”
According to OSHA Regional Administrator Galen Blanton, the SHARP recognition means Maibec has been removed from the administration’s general inspection list until June 2, 2019. “This recognition represents your successful participation in a comprehensive on-site consultation survey, correction of all hazards identified during this review, and the operation of an effective safety and health program,” Blanton wrote in a congratulatory letter.
Steven Greeley, consultant/program manager for Safety Works!, also wrote to congratulate Gagnon and the entire facility.
“Your company and the employees are a role model for other industries in the state,” Greeley said. “Achieving SHARP in the first place is quite the accomplishment, but to maintain is even harder.”
Safety Works! personnel will visit the mill Aug. 17 to congratulate the employees and present a renewal date plate for the facility’s SHARP plaque.
