Following an accident in Washburn on Thursday, Maine State Police charged a local man with operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage.
Ricky Castonguay, 63, was alone, and driving north on Hines Street when his 1997 Lincoln drifted off the right side of the roadway, according to a press release issued by investigating Trooper Adam Stoutamyer.
The trooper reported that Castonguay then steered the car to the left, completely crossing the roadway and up into the front yard of a nearby home where the Lincoln ran over a small tree. The car continued on, veering back into a ditch, again completely crossing the road and traveling south down the opposite shoulder of the road before crossing the roadway yet a third time, according to Stoutamyer.
Castonguay then traveled back into the same yard before returning to the roadway and driving the “very damaged vehicle over a half of a mile to his own residence” where he stopped and got out of the car, the trooper reported.
The homeowner whose front yard was damaged reported the incident to police. Trooper Patrick Pescitelli assisted Stoutamyer with the investigation.
After Castonguay was located at his home, he was transported to The Aroostook Medical Center where he was treated and released, according to Stoutamyer.
Castonguay is scheduled to make his initial appearance on the charges on Oct. 5 in Caribou District Court.
