CARIBOU, Maine — Mad Science of South Portland will visit Caribou Thursday, Aug. 17, to present two different science shows for kids.
The first show is sponsored by the Caribou Public Library and funded by the Adrina McElwain Memorial Fund and The Onion Foundation, and will be held at the Caribou Recreation Center from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.
“Engineering a Better World” will let schoolchildren step into the shoes of engineers with demonstrations and interactive experiments, designed to inspire them to think about how engineers design things to make the world a better place. Children will team up with fellow civil engineers to build a 6-foot Roman arch, and an intelligent robot will display some impressive Kung Fu and yoga moves that will get kids excited about robotics engineering. A “sparkling” demonstration will electrify creativity, and an amusing experiment with alternative energy will encourage children to ponder the future of this innovation.
The second workshop, sponsored by the city and Sitel, will see the Mad Science team at Thursdays on Sweden from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with their “Up, Up, and Away” program. Kids will learn how the weight of the earth’s atmosphere pushes down on you with the force of an elephant, and explore how Bernoulli’s principle creates enough lift to make a jumbo jet fly or how air pressure can be used to launch a hot air balloon. A vortex generator will create giant smoke rings, and attendees can take a ride on the Mad Science hovercraft.
Mad Science shows are fun and educational and hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, innovators, and engineers.
