A Florida man and woman were hospitalized Monday afternoon when their motorcycle struck a moose on U.S. Route 2 in southern Aroostook County.
Paul Duel, 56, of Eustis, Florida, was traveling south on Route 2 at about 2:43 p.m. on a 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle when a moose ran into the road in front of him in the area of North Yarmouth Academy Grant township, according to Cpl. Chuck Michaud of the Maine State Police Troop F division in Houlton,
Duel was not able to avoid the moose and after striking the animal, the motorcycle went onto its side, skidding into the northbound lane before coming to rest.
Both Duel and his passenger, Lisa Ann Lotti, 47, also of Eustis, Florida, suffered injuries that were not considered life threatening, according to the corporal. The two were transported first to the Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln before being transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Neither individual was wearing a helmet, according to Michaud. The moose was not seriously injured in the collision.
