OAKFIELD, Maine — Firefighters from five departments helped extinguish a garage fire at the home of Linda Slauenwhite and Laurel Peters Wednesday afternoon.

Oakfield, Stacyville, Island Falls, Patten and Houlton firefighters responded to the Drew Street residence shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday when a neighbor reported smoke coming from the garage of Slauenwhite’s and Peters’ home.

Slauenwhite said she and Peters had just left the residence about 10 minutes prior and were headed to the transfer station when they received word from a neighbor that there was smoke coming from the garage.

“Who knows what would have happened if our neighbors hadn’t seen the smoke,” Slauenwhite said. “The firefighters got here very quickly. We were very lucky.”

The fire was mostly contained to the garage as a backhoe was used to pull the building away from the house. A cockatiel inside the home was saved by Peters.

Attempts to reach the Oakfield Fire Department for additional information were not successful as crews remained at the scene Wednesday afternoon.
